A Buddhist monk has attracted criticism after a photo which purportedly shows the religious man fondling a woman’s breast surfaced on the Internet. Reports say Buddhists are governed by strict rules including not being allowed to be alone with a woman, let alone touching them intimately.
It was gathered that the religious leaders at a monastery in Oddar Meanchey in north-western Cambodia admitted that the monk in question was one of them. However, the religious leaders denied that the monk touched the breast of a woman, arguing that it was a man who had begun hormone replacement therapy.
The leaders said it was fine for the monk to carry out the ‘charm-boosting prayer’ that involves putting his hand above the heart of the devotee. When the same ritual is carried out on women the monk touches her head. The gender rule was introduced by Buddha and is obligatory for all monks.
